All the Hits So Far But Don't Expect Too Much: Poetry, Prose & Other Sundry Items ReviewSo my brother comes home with this book and a new cd last night. Apparently this band from Michigan had to be listened to, and everyone should love them...well it's good music, but just not my style, but really well composed. Other than that, it's midnight thirty, and I just want to sleep, he tells me nothing about the book, so I just leave it be.
Well it's Sunday the morning after, and I'm up for church, and the book is still there on the table, right where he left it. Why didn't he take it? Well I'll never know, but I'm glad I picked it up.
The book is called "All the Hits so Far, but don't expect too much" by Bradley Hathaway.
You see, Bradley is a poet, hence the first half of this blog that was just a mere cheap imitation. The book was published in the last month, and he's only 23. I had only read one poem before church (rightly named "Manly Man.") and I was already thinking that this was definitely worth a look. So by the time I was gone from church I had read another poem, along with the introductions and acknowledgments, and I finished the rest in less than an hour. "Why is this so interesting?" you're asking (I know you are.) Well let me tell you (unless you don't want to know, but again, it's well worth a look.)
Well you may be thinking "Matt's an artist, he appreciates all type of art, so this isn't that big a deal." and that may be why I like this guy. but the truth is, I don't like him just because he writes good poetry, it's what he's doing with his poetry that has got me so intrigued.
Bradley didn't just publish a book at 23 (though that's quite an accomplishment) but he's only been writing for about 2 years. For those 2 years though, he's also been traveling the U.S. Opening for bands such as Blindside and reading his poems in front of 10,000 people at a time (more or less.) He speaks to a generation that really needs his words. He's using a gift that God has given him, and telling teenagers about God's love and joy.
Why is this so amazing though? because he can relate. Not to everyone mind you. but those teens who call themselves hardcore and do the local concert scene every other weekend, this book might be for you.
His poetry covers topics from "the annoying hardcore kid" to just wanting a bear hug from Jesus himself. (Ok, I know those are weird subjects to fit in between, but bear with me.) I agree with one of the quotes, where this book is for those kids that just stand in the back with their arms crossed (you know who you are.)
He talks about himself, how he was that kid with long hair and no pecks and called faggot by the other guys. How he can still be a "Manly Man" because he still "leaves the seat up." He may be skinny, but he still has his dreams.
He talks about that girl who broke the relationship off but didn't have much to say about it. And mostly he talks about the love of God, and covers it on many different levels.
The best thing about this book, is that along with the poems, are his own personal commentaries behind each one. This helps you to come closer to the poet himself, and realize the meaning of how and why he writes what he writes.
I guess it's just hard for me to express into words, because to me you just have to read it. I already know I'm wrong in that, not everyone will relate to this, but the truth is I really did. and reading about "the hardcore kid who went too far" I pictured this one person, and from beating up punks to wearing girl pants to being a vegan, well...I just couldn't help but laugh.
I already know this isn't giving Bradley Hathaway much credit, but I just had to write something about this. He gives me new inspiration (maybe not to write, because I am not yet a poet.) The best ones being the ones that their poems just hit them, and that's what happened to him. God just..."hit" him with this poem, and since then he's been writing some great things, sure the talent was always there, but he just never thought about using it, and that in itself is an inspiration.
I guess it can teach us all a few things, that there is something in us that God is waiting to unleash...but I guess that's too deep for now.
Like I said, I didn't give him much credit, but you should also check him out for yourself. There's a lot that I wanted to say, but the words just don't flow like I want them to. For right now I'll just say that this book will be my recommendation for you all. I wish I could've done more for what this guy has done for me in just an hour, (I've failed to mention a lot,) but for right now I'm just trying to get his name out there.
[...] and here it is. Thanks Brad, you were a real inspiration.
Later,
Matt Marasigan
